The Idea was

By Eli YebeiIn the heart of rural Bomet County, Sotik Subcounty, a remarkable initiative is
transforming the lives of children aged 5 to 18.
Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Rockies Baseball Club has brought hope
and opportunity to young people at a time when many have been idle due to school closures.
Led by dedicated coaches Denis Mitei, Eli Kiprono Yebei and Brian Kiprono, the club uses the
sport of baseball 5 to provide children with a platform to dream and achieve more. The club’s
journey began with the aim of promoting both the athletic and academic development of
children from modest backgrounds.

The idea was to get young people and children off the streets and offer them an alternative in the form of sport, to teach them teamwork and social behaviour.

Our History:

The South Rockies Baseball5 Club is asports (baseball5) development initiative in Kenya, founded in 2019. It focuses on promoting Baseball5, a fast-paced version of baseball that requires minimal equipment. The club has already made a significant impact, winning two national championships in 2020 and 2021. Based in Bomet County, the club aims to increase youth participation in sports (baseball5) and has been involved in organizing local tournaments and community engagement programs.

In addition to the South Rockies Club, a related initiative called the Kakuma Baseball5 Club was launched in May 2022 to support young players, particularly children under 15, in Kakuma Refugee Camp. Both clubs emphasize teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills through interactive training and games.

The club’s success is driven by its participatory approach, which involves local communities, strategic partnerships, and continuous training. However, challenges such as funding and resource limitations remain key issues. Political and institutional support, along with policy advocacy, are seen as crucial to sustaining and expanding these programs.
